HI97721C is an advanced portable photometer for the measurement of iron in water up to 5.00 mg/L. This meter has a superior optical system that utilizes a reference detector and narrow band interference filters for extremely fast and repeatable measurements.
- No warm up time before taking a measurement
- Tutorial mode for step-by-step instructions
- CAL Check for performance verification and calibration
In domestic water, the EPA sets secondary non-mandatory levels for iron at 0.3 mg/L because high levels of iron do not pose a risk to human health. However, levels higher than this cause water to have a rusty color, sediment, metallic taste, and can cause reddish or orange staining to laundry, appliances, and porcelain. Iron is also an indicator of corrosion in industrial settings, irrigation systems, and boilers and cooling towers.
The HI97721C uses an adaptation of method 3500-Fe B, the phenanthroline method, from Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 23rd Edition. In the phenanthroline method, iron is brought into solution and reduced to its ferrous state (Fe2+). The solution is then treated with 1,10-phenanthroline at a pH of 3.2 to 3.3. Three molecules of phenanthroline then react with one ferrous iron atom to form a complex with an orange color. The intensity of the color is directly proportional to the amount of ferrous iron in the sample. The phenanthroline method is ideal for measuring samples with a high concentration of iron. The HI97721 Iron Photometer can measure iron in water from 0.00 to 5.00 mg/L (ppm).
The HI97721C has an innovative optical system that offers superior performance in accuracy, repeatability, and the short amount of time it takes to perform a measurement. This compact, waterproof meter is extremely user friendly with a tutorial mode that walks the user graphically, step by step, in performing a measurement. The use of a backlit dot matrix LED allows the use of virtual keys which makes the operation of the meter very intuitive including selecting different units of measure, reviewing GLP data, recalling the last 50 measurements, and customizing the meter to user preferences.
